Sugar Nova – Somebody To Love (2023)

Known for their eclectic blend of soul and pop floating in a psychedelic haze of sound, listening to Sugar Nova is like having a powerful kaleidoscopic blast of light hit you in the head…in a good way, of course. Combining the talents of Luke Miller and Rachel Eisenstat, the US-based duo uses their industry experiences and influences to keep your body moving to the beat. While Sugar Nova was only formed in 2022, the pair’s other projects bring a sophisticated style to this insatiable new group. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Somebody To Love’.

We first discovered Sugar Nova earlier this year with their single ‘I Wouldn’t Worry’ – a blast of electropop tinged with indie-rock flutters. Several months later, with several new singles to the Sugar Nova name, Eisenstat and Miller released a cover of Jefferson Airplane’s ‘Somebody To Love’. Taking the iconic psychedelic rock song by the hand, Sugar Nova brings ‘Somebody To Love’ into the 21st century; however, a nostalgic whiff of the 1967 original crashes through in Eisenstat’s powerhouse vocals.

While Miller spins the beats building a psychedelic swirl in the melody, the vocals cling to the core of Jefferson Airplane. Eisenstat explains, “I decided to stay true to Grace Slick’s powerhouse vocal style from the original 1967 psychedelic rock album rather than bringing a lighter pop tone to the melody…I loved how the true rock vocal paired with Luke’s arrangement.” Joined by Jay Lapp from The Steel Wheels, a bold tone soars in the infectious chorus.

Just as ‘Somebody To Love’ is given a facelift with the electronic beats, an eclectic pairing with percussion and ethnic strings enhances the song’s uniqueness. Luke Miller shares, “I wanted to bring out the psychedelic qualities of the song in a modern electronic house context. I contrasted fading in sounds with the sharp attack of the Oud string…”

Similar to Jefferson Airplane’s version but with a distinct difference in their cover song, Sugar Nova slips into yesteryear for the sound bringing ‘Somebody To Love’ back with a hard-hitting flush.

In addition to the single, Sugar Nova released a music video for ‘Somebody To Love’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
