Storm Boy – It’s The Mess That Makes Us (2022)

Described as a “confident, indulgent, fist-throwing movie climax moment” experience for audiences, Storm Boy is energetic, exhilarating and exhausting (but in a good way). The brainchild of singer-songwriter Chas Roberts, Storm Boy is a project focused on positive vibes oozing from music filled with emotion. Having “cut his teeth” in the 1990s US punk scene, this talented artist has a nostalgic flair, but he innovatively meets that with a contemporary punk blast. Come with us as we dip our toes into his single ‘It’s The Mess That Makes Us’.

When I first heard the title of this song, I immediately thought about how our imperfections are what make us intriguing. How our mess allows us to stand out from the crowd, to be different in a unique way and have people accept that. Then again, it might just be me trying to validate the organised chaos that is my life. Storm Boy takes on this existential untidiness in his song ‘It’s The Mess That Makes Us’ where “desperation meets hope across a bridge woven with nostalgia and regret…” – a slightly different interpretation to mine. However, just as melancholic as Storm Boy’s take may be, it is his aim to “seek joy without abandoning the sorrow” in his music.

Taken off his debut EP 4 Songs, ‘It’s The Mess That Makes Us’ lies between Sex Pistols and The Clash with pounding drums, powerful guitars and bold vocals. Beautifully textured, the instrumentation plays a prominent role, but Storm Boy’s voice is delicately interwoven within the melody – as if the pounding drums are protecting his charming tones. I find this particularly interesting as it seems the melody pushes instrumental chaos but contains an organised and powerful allure in the vocal execution. Organised chaos, eh?

Recorded with Scot Michael at Titan Recording Studio, ‘It’s The mess That Makes Us’ is a bold, refreshing track capturing the grittiness of human desperation in a hopeful punk rock bubble.
