StoneCabin – Nine Vicious Men (2023)

Imagine one of those Clint Eastwood films where he enters the dusty town with nothing but a pistol and a squint in his eye. Now, take a step into the tavern with a couple of rough-looking punters drinking whiskey at the bar. Now, turn around and listen to the band playing a whiskey-soaked tune on a grimy little stage – StoneCabin is that band.

Formed in 2019, The Preacher (vocals and guitar), Stonepicking (guitar), El Hombre Del Dia (bass and keys), and The Midlands Man (drums, percussion and backing vocals) blended their influences and musical experiences to create, according to Call of the Wild, “…the dystopian desert bar rock of lore.” Despite being a rather new band, StoneCabin is turning heads across the globe with further coverage from Its All Indie, Artisti Online, Indie Dock Music Blog, and many more.

Following their well-received EP, Black Cactus, StoneCabin blasts into 2023 with the single ‘Nine Vicious Men’. True to form, ‘Nine Vicious Men’ oozes a hard-hitting gruffness suited to Mr Eastwood and his weary travels. Merging the gruffness of grunge with old-school folk-rock, the single has a tight arrangement of country guitars, drums and an interesting “showdown at the OK Corral” whistling. It might be this whistling atop acoustic finger-picking guitar styles that takes me back to those old cowboy films; then again, it might be the darkness of the track that makes me think of Clint Eastwood standing in the door ready for a fight.

Just as the tune puts a knot in your stomach with its intriguing melody, so does the lyricism match the grimy ambience of the whiskey-soaked song. Gruff and gritty, The Preacher’s rich vocals sing a murder ballad telling the tale of murder revenge through rough justice. Using elegant storytelling skills, StoneCabin keeps us captivated like children listening to a tale of sheriffs, renegades, rogues and vigilantes. If Sergio Leone needed a theme song for his epic spaghetti westerns, ‘Nine Vicious Men’ would be it.
