Steve Dennis – Annie (2024)

We truly are in the throes of autumn now and with his new single ‘Annie’, Steve Dennis has embodied the season. If you could see a song, this track would be flush with reds, oranges and yellows on a backdrop of a clear blue sky. Whether intentional or not, I can’t help but feel that this veteran of the New England music is really channelling the land which he calls home.

For fans of indie-folk greats Frightened Rabbit and Bon Iver, this captivating track is one to get lost in. An exploration of love at first sight, the fear, the risk and ultimately the excitement it brings, as you push yourself to act.

From the opening bars, it’s clear it is a well-put-together track, with a beautiful arrangement of chords that carry through, whilst allowing focus on the wonderfully crafted lyrics. A skilful storyteller, Dennis takes us on a journey, exploring a real-life encounter with a checkout girl, giving us a glimpse into his psyche during this encounter. The line “I can’t risk letting you get away” has so much resonance, not only in a romantic context but serves as a reminder that we all need to go with our gut and take more chances. Dennis himself summed this up best with his description of the track: “’Annie’ is for those people who are afraid of rejection. Just give it a shot.”

We are extremely fortunate that ‘Annie’ was so well received during his live shows, as it almost ended up on the cutting room floor, which would have been a travesty. It does however bare the question of if this was nearly left out what gems can we expect to be left in? Well, hopefully, we won’t have to wait long. as Steve Dennis has plenty more on the horizon with the promise of more releases on the way. I for one can’t wait, but until then ‘Annie’ along with his previous releases ‘Walls’, ‘Run’ and ‘Lighthouse Inn’ will keep me entertained.
