Stereo Sunrise – Outside (2023)

Descending from the rock sounds of the 90s, Canadian quartet Stereo Sunrise brings a nostalgic flair to their alt-rock sound. Originally formed in 2011 when the band came together via classified ads (not the dodgy sort), other local bands, and chance meetings at bookstores, Stereo Sunrise released several singles and EPs to critical acclaim. Yet, while the first two EPs included Tommy Metcalfe on drums, it was Mark Hoerdt that filled his shoes for the third EP and is part of the current lineup. Justin Koetsier (vocals and rhythm guitar), Piero Montemurro (lead guitar), Arih SK (bass) and Hoerdt are now turning heads on an international scale. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Outside’.

On the heels of their well-received song ‘Plains On Fire’, ‘Outside’ is a soothing, smooth, gentle single oozing a laidback mellowness. Charming and elegant, the harmonic combination of guitars and drums lay a steady foundation for Koetsier’s rich vocals. A leaning toward Weezer, Tweak and Blind Melon can be heard in ‘Outside’ taking you back to those summer days with chilled-out rock vibes; however, a slight contemporary flair exists making Stereo Sunrise familiar but fresh.

One element I find intriguing about ‘Outside’ is how the theme aligns with the feeling of being out in a wide field on a warm summer’s day. Speaking to our innermost connection with nature, Stereo Sunrise explains that ‘Outside’ “…is about our relationship with the outdoors, and how that changes as we get older. There is less free time to spend and less time outside. It becomes harder to find the time, but the outside is always there, waiting.”

Recorded and produced by Siegfried Meier, ‘Outside’ was recorded in an old barn which was converted into a recording studio. Sincere, sentimental and heartfelt, this Canadian band take your hand and lead you through a valley of flowers with a grin on your face.
