Stefan West – paint me how you see me (2024)

Life is complex, intricate, and just sometimes weird; its ebb and flow takes us from beauty to evil, bliss to tragedy, challenging to simplistic, and oh so much more. Singer-songwriter Stefan West aims to “connect with as many people as possible” offering understanding, acceptance, friendship, and solace in his melodies. While we only discovered West not too long ago with ‘Take What You Need’, he has been turning heads internationally since 2020’s ‘Falling For You’. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘paint me how you see me’.

On the heels of ‘Take What You Need’ and ‘Slow Down World’, ‘paint me how you see me’ is another taster to his upcoming album just another sunflower, searching for the sun. Recorded and produced with Chris Gatz, with mastering by Joe Carra, the song retains West’s pop-rock tone with pop-punk sensibilities but with a kick of folk clinging to the edges. Crashing drums match a bold bass, then the soaring guitar fills the tune with a vintage folk-rock flair offering something familiar and refreshingly new.

For me, the melody is intriguing whipping you about in a hurricane of music, but West’s vocals add that something special. With a full-bodied weightiness, his rich voice adds warmth to ‘paint me how you see me’ – like a friend giving you a big hug. Yet, within the comfort, vulnerability lingers as a fragile thread within the charming tune. While the hard-hitting melody carries a range of emotions, it is the lyricism that adds profoundness. Stefan West explains:

“’paint me how you see me’ celebrates the profound impact that true friends have during life’s transitions. This song is about the importance of friendship, especially that one person who has been there through thick and thin. As we grow older, we encounter new environments and people, but it’s those day-one friends who truly understand our journey. This song expresses my gratitude for my best friend who has taught me so much just by being himself, and it’s a reminder of how vital those connections are as we navigate our lives.”
