Spencer Spark – Springboard (2023)

Launching us into a kaleidoscopic world of synths, sparkles and brightly coloured lights flitting all around, Spencer Spark is a vibrant, vivacious alt-pop artist. Known for her enthusiastic live performances, this Australian musician has established herself across the Inner West music scene. Already garnering a following in Australia, Spencer Spark is also reaching an international audience with coverage from Send Me Your Ears, She Makes Music and various playlists. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Springboard’.

Re-emerging from the Covid-19 lockdown, where she happened to be working as a radiographer, Spencer Spark lights a spark with her debut single. Following the EP, Space Girl Spencer, (released in 2020), ‘Springboard’ is a “groovy, fun track about how love can send you soaring.” Inspired by a conversation about love with her housemate Dale, Spark stuffed all the vibrancy of being in love into a hard-hitting, synth-driven three-and-a-half-minute-long track ready for enjoyment.

Drawing on her inner Björk and Kate Bush, Spencer Spark’s ‘Springboard’ has an indescribable oddness about it. Dragging us back to the 1980s, Spark’s vocals have the obscurity of Bush matching the mystifying synth-led melody. I am reminded of Kate Bush’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ regarding Spark’s vocal execution – the mysterious high notes and wistful ambience; however, calming charm slivers through the whimsical soundscape acting as a warm sonic hug. The thing is, she may be hugging you but you’re also being twirled about losing yourself in an awe-inspiring, grin-inducing way.

An artist who tosses herself into the music sharing her vulnerability, Spencer Spark takes us on journeys with her melodies. ‘Springboard’ evokes a sense of freedom which might align with her independence as a “loud and proud queer singer-songwriter…” Sincere, sentimental and brutally honest with a cheeky innocence slathered on the top, ‘Springboard’ is a track you will happily have on repeat.
