SØUNDHOOSE – Loner (2022)

Unleashing your insecurities is often the best way to overcome them and this is exactly what SØUNDHOOSE does with their single ‘Loner’. Through the powerful chorus, distorted riffs and fury of the melody, the band tackles feelings of loneliness and brings the understanding that we are all loners in our own way. Calling for all of us to unite in our ‘aloneness’, the band breaks the mould and finds a rocking sense of catharsis.

Their unapologetic sound continues their assault on stigmas and the ignorance of topics that rage around us but always seem to be neglected. With this single, Jeremy Bauer (bass), Paul Burns (drums) and Brandon Smith (vocals), pave the way for their first album, set to drop next year. Using a sound that is packed with raw power, melodic fury and the angst of pop-rock greats, the band is sure to have you rocking out to their sound.

The pulses of sound that form the opening of ‘Loner’ instantly grab your attention before the beat gets your foot tapping to the sound. This rather easy opening moves into a shaking tone that gets your entire body moving to the sound. There is a subtle fury to the sound that seems to build through the low levels and flows from the base of your feet to your chest where it bursts in your heart on the chorus. The guitars fly between the beats of the melody to bring an indie rock edge to the sound. It is a really engaging melody that has this light touch of echoing distortion that brings an unique edge to the track. While the verses move you with their quiet fury, the chorus has you soaring into the stratosphere as the band asks a question that many people have.

Against the pulses of the opening, the first refrain of the chorus chants out of the depths. It is a really powerful way to start the track as the band state that they are loners and asks why the world hates them. This flows into a paced performance that bounces off the fury of the music. The lyrics are really catchy and will have you singing along before you know what has happened. As the band touches on the loneliness many feel and how this affects them, they also bring a sense of community by letting us know we are not alone in these feelings. This sense of communal catharsis and unity in loneliness is enhanced by the layered harmonies of the chorus.

Through the rocking tones of ‘Loner’, SØUNDHOOSE let us know we are not alone in our loneliness while offering a sense of communal catharsis. The melody is packed with engaging melodics that have you rocking out and bouncing off the energy of their sound. The vocals soar over the music while the chorus is a combined chant letting loose emotions often held close to the chest.
