Sorrell – Warm (2022)

We all have moments where we yearn for something more than what we currently have in life. While this is a normal feeling, it is often hard to capture, but that is exactly what Sorrell has done with their dreamy single ‘Warm’. Using washed-out guitars and lush instrumentation, they fill your chest with that sense of yearning while reaching out for something beyond what you have right now.

The first single off their upcoming EP, the track uses soft spoken-word lyrics to enhance the dreamscapes of the track. Not only is the track the first off their upcoming EP, it is also the first since their pandemic-enforced hiatus. Dylan Lee (vocals, guitar), Sebastian Zamfirescu (guitar), Noel Walker-O’Dowd (bass) and Robin Smith (drums) look at creating the sound for uncertain times that speaks to the experiences we have all shared over the last few years.

‘Warm’ floats into existence with a wash of jangling guitars and hazy warmth. There is a slightly retro shoegaze feeling to the melody that swirls around you with pastel colours and cotton soft clouds. It is a soft dreamscape that is a little at odds with the yearning of the vocals. The melody has a seriously washed-out feeling to it that easily gets you floating to the sound. You can sink back into the softness and let your mind wander to thoughts of what-ifs and could-bes, leading you to a dream of something more than what you have. The lush instrumentation continues to carry you through the single as they bring a touch of rock to the dreamy pop and shoegaze.

Weaving through the dreamy tones like a golden ribbon of light are Lee’s vocals. There is a spoken-word feeling to the lyrics that adds a poetry to the meander of the mind that characterises the single. While carrying this feeling, the lyrics have been wrapped in a performance that is as washed out as the music. There is a softness to the performance that settles on your skin like a cool breeze. As the vocal performance enhances the soft dreaminess of the single, the lyrics draw you into a daydream packed with longing for something better than what you have. This feeling expands in your chest and leaves the tingle of bittersweet emotions. Between the vocals and melody, Sorrell has perfectly captured a daydream of a better life packed full of abstract potential.

Using the washed-out sounds, soft vibes and dreamy vocals of ‘Warm’, Sorrell capture the feeling of sinking into a daydream packed with longing for something more in life. The melody is wonderfully soft, creating the easy dreamy vibes that allow your mind to reach out into the endless possibilities of what-ifs. Lee’s vocals are a cool breeze carrying the poetry of the spoken-word lyricism.
