Sophia Stephens – Fervor (2024)
Despite her young age, 17-year-old Sophia Stephens has penned over 300 songs, 3 albums, and has such a sophisticated sound that you would imagine someone with more industry knowledge blaring out of your speakers. Moreover, while she is only beginning to play live shows, her stage confidence and engaging appeal make us believe she is far more experienced – this is natural talent at its finest. With intense intimacy flowing through her lyricism, Stephens can capture her thoughts in sound resonating with others on an emotional level. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Fervor’.
Following her debut EP Remnantal, Sophia Stephens strides into 2024 with her single ‘Fervor’. The melody is intriguing but the immediate draw to Stephens’ songs is her off-kilter, obscure, bold alto vocals. The younger sister of Amanda Palmer but with the ferocity of bands like Hole and Garbage, the songstress captures the sound of the 90s with a contemporary alternative rock edginess. Using a cabaret rock style, this former theatre kid weaves an intricate single with flairs of richness entwined with dark decadence – a style that is entirely Sophia Stephens.
Produced with Trey Vittetoe, the studio-recorded track retains the vulnerable delicacy of the original acoustic “guitar and voice” execution; however, it adds a lightning-bolt intensity to the arrangement. Fusing crashing drums with scorching guitars in a blurred line of grunge and pop-rock, ‘Fervor’ has dark charm in a desperate mire.
Undoubtedly, Stephens’ unique vocals reach out as a prominent, significant element, but she is more than an odd voice slicing through a dark melody. Initially penned because she “really liked the word and wanted to encompass its meaning…”, ‘Fervor’ is a hint of whimsy turned into something more intricate. The term fervour means to act with intensity and passionate feeling – emotions that burst from Stephens’ new song. Yet, while the passionate fervour of ‘Fervor’ is intense, there is a vulnerable fragility hidden behind the true concept – “a warning about the dangers of loving something or someone with fervour”.
Crawling into your brain, rattling about your cranium and then reaching into your chest to steal your heart and ensnare your soul, Sophia Stephens is a name I will not soon forget.
