Sonya Glass – My Revenge (2024)
From the age of 5, singer-songwriter Sonya Glass knew she was going to be a musician sparking the burning passion of music in her heart. Before she could hold a decent adult conversation, or even the logical ones of 10-year-olds, the bubbly child started honing her vocals preparing for her musical future. Skip ahead some years and Glass is turning heads with her intimate, engaging, emotional melodies. In 2016 she released her debut EP Shell of a Self, featuring the stand-out single ‘Flicker’. Seven years later, her name reached ears far beyond her US borders making waves on a global scale with ‘Wish You Would (Stay)’. Today, we take a gander at her most recent release ‘My Revenge’ – join us, why don’t you?
Sauntering across various flavours of pop, Glass retains her alternative pop tone in ‘My Revenge’; however, unlike ‘Itachi’ or ‘Lonely Girl’, ‘My Revenge’ delves into the world of dark-pop with hints of classic rock fluttering in the melody. Recorded, produced and co-written by Shell Enns, the new single is a harmonic symphony of guitars, drums and Glass’ vocals. Yet, as sophisticated as the arrangement is, there remains a guttural rawness and gritty vulnerability in the tune.
Taking us along the road of broken relationships and exploring its intricacies, Sonya Glass delves into the aftermath of a complex breakup. Some people step away without any turmoil, while others live in a world of despair and fragile isolation; Glass takes the road of angsty revenge. Filled with harsh haunting along a chilling melody, ‘My Revenge’ brings the oomph of “bloody hell, you suck” with the stillness of a “you’re not worth my time”. Glass explains:
“I wrote ‘My Revenge’ after a bad break-up. It is my story of wanting to hurt this person as badly as they’d hurt me. Before doing so, I discovered it would actually be toxic, not therapeutic, for me. This person wasn’t actually worth the amount of energy I’d waste on hating them.”
On her Spotify account, Glass states she wants to be like the Beetlejuice character Lydia Deetz. In Beetlejuice, Deetz describes herself as “strange and unusual” – and I think Sonya Glass has hit the nail. She’s not strange and unusual in a negative way, but her ethereal beauty and hypnotic charm give her a glowing “strange and unusual” vibe.
