Sonny Gullage – Things I Can’t Control (2024)

An old soul trapped in a young body; singer-songwriter Sonny Gullage brings the wisdom of the blues to contemporary audiences. With music in his bones, New Orleans native Gullage has a deep connection to the blues and Gospel music with his father, bassist Tony Gullage, and grandmother, Sister Alberta Gullage being pioneers in the blues scene. At only 12 years of age, he penned a song about the BP Oil Spill’s devastating effects; now in his mid-twenties, he offers a tribute to his journey from the young poet to the modern-day blues wizard. The most recent addition to his discography is the single ‘Things I Can’t Control’.

In his upcoming debut album Go Be Free, Gullage takes us on his journey from up-and-coming musician to the sophisticated blues artist you see before you (or rather hear through your speakers). In a society filled with stereotypes, finding happiness within yourself even if you aren’t where you’re supposed to be is difficult; ‘Things I Can’t Control’ captures the raw essence of this issue in rich melodic tones. He explains:

“’Things I Can’t Control’ is a powerful anthem that resonates with its message of resilience and acceptance. This song is about focusing on what we can change and letting go of what we can’t. It’s a reminder to live fully and let the music guide us through.”

Following the well-received single ‘Go Be Free’, ‘Things I Can’t Control’ melds old-school funk, blues and soul in a toe-tapping three-minute tune. From the bold bass to hard-hitting guitar, shimmering keyboards, powerful horns and pounding drums, the single is a toss-and-turn flood of soul-stirring music. From the heart-warming opening to the jovial end, ‘Things I Can’t Control’ lifts your spirit as you fly along in a kaleidoscopic sonic swirl; however, it is Gullage’s rich vocals that bring sassiness, sophistication and a cheeky wink to the track.

In addition to the single, Sonny Gullage released an official music video for ‘Things I Can’t Control’. You can view the video below or Blind Pig Records’ YouTube channel.
