Songs for Sabotage – High Fives (2021)

The last years has resulted in a lot of questions being asked about ourselves and the world at large. Songs for Sabotage have felt all these questions and ask a few heavy ones in ‘High Fives’. Through the single, they question what we all feel is missing in life and whether we are simply stuck in the moment. Touching on existential dread, FOMO and much more, the track slots into that moment just before you snap out of the sinking mire of emotion.

This dip into existential crises comes from Lina Sophie (vocals) and Richey Rose (guitar). Their musical journey together began in 2017 when they met at a Brooklyn bar and bonded over a mutual love for Swedish pop, 80s alternative and electro-pop. They formed the band in 2019 and released their first singles in 2020.

With a glittering opening ‘High Fives’ gently pulls you into the soundscape. The light twinkling tones give way to a danceable beat that slowly sinks its hooks into your brain. There is a touch of dream-pop to the melody that slides along a foundation of indie-pop. While there are clear pop sensibilities in the melody, there is a gloomy feeling to the lower levels. This works perfectly to enhance the emotional turmoil of the lyrics. As the song progresses, there is a swell of instrumentation with guitars that call to your soul and beats that swirl around your head.

Sophie’s vocals are as delicate as the glittering tones of the opening when she first enters. The smooth flow of her performance draws you into the thoughts of the lyrics. They have an interesting feeling to them as they question what is missing in life. Her performance has you hanging in a moment of decision where you consider everything in your life. This turns into a dreamy movement that wisps past your face like a gentle breeze.

Songs for Sabotage touch on an existential crisis while making you consider everything around you in ‘High Fives’. Through the soft tones of the single, they place you in a moment of decision. Bringing many of the thoughts and emotions we have all faced in the last year to life, they gently send you down a river of consideration.
