Solar Bloom – This Tiny World (2023)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Matt DeVoti, Solar Bloom fuses indie-pop with psychedelic flairs and dreamy vibes in his distinctive sound. Already turning heads as part of a larger music scene of creators such as Machinery of the Human Heart and Human Zoo, this group of art-pop producers “have tapped into the thriving audience who crave exemplary musicianship and originality…” – and, well, Solar Bloom has a natural penchant for overshadowing mainstream pop culture. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘This Tiny World’.

The first release in two years, Solar Bloom re-emerges with his new single ‘This Tiny World’. Once again placing listeners in a swirl of dream-pop sound, ‘This Tiny World’ is filled with electronic swoons and swoops of bold beats. Similar to his debut single ‘Silene Tomentosa’, there is a vintage flair to the new single hinting at the synth-pop stylings of Depeche Mode. While a retro pop sound is prominent, a slither of modern-day indie-pop will appeal to fans of Tame Impala.

Known for his “blend of digital and analog sounds”, one can expect a hazy veil of psychedelic charm to Solar Bloom’s melodies. ‘This Tiny World’ has an edge with a distinct indie-rock thrill. Produced alongside Joey Papa and engineer Joe Lambert, live drums and electronic guitar bring brashness with catchy riffs, powerful beats, and innovative versatility. Interestingly, while there is this rock-ness, all instrumentation meets in a psychedelic dreaminess in ‘This Tiny World’.

Just as the melody is intriguing, the lyricism adds further intimacy to its profound theme. Solar Bloom explains:

“The idea came while I was sitting with my cat thinking, ‘I feel like I understand this little creature so well but how can that be when we don’t even speak the same language?’ It led me to think about how much communication is done non-verbally, not just between me and my cat but between me and others… I explored this idea in ‘This Tiny World’ by using the imagery of a cat talking to its own to illustrate the ways people express affection for each other without using words.”
