Sofia Evangelina – Lone Wolf (2023)
At the age of three, Dubai-based singer-songwriter Sofia Evangelina was embracing her passion for performance. In her youth, she was nicknamed “mini-Christina” with her vocals being reminiscent of powerhouse Christina Aguilera. As she grew, Evangelina discovered more influences and became inspired by various acts from Etta James to Nina Simone, Mariah Carey to Whitney Houston, operas by Andrew Lloyd Webber to El Grand Toro; it was all consumed resulting in charismatic RnB/pop sound. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Lone Wolf’.
When we left Sofia Evangelina, she took us on a journey of swirling emotions in the soulful ‘Get Outta My Head’. Skip ahead about a year and she tantalises our earbuds with the pop single ‘Lone Wolf’. Co-written and produced with Jovan Jovanov, the song captures the intensity of Evangelina’s voice but with a soothing quality fluttering in the background. Swooning synths wrap about bold beats tossing you into a twirl of kaleidoscopic colours; however, just as it is a hazy fog, the masterful vocals act as an anchor within the madness. I find this interesting for the soulful vocals also contribute to the spiral into an emotional chasm.
Needless to say, you can lose yourself in the melody, but it is the lyricism that connects with audiences on an intimate level. Taking the image of a “lone wolf”, the single explores both the joy of success and the despair of isolation. Evangelina explains:
“The song is about the lonely path one has to overcome on the way to success. Through this time, there could be a misunderstanding by friends and family, betrayals, envy, lack of support, your own doubts…and yet the lone wolf keeps moving until such time as it meets other lone wolves, and the “pack” is formed…”
With her powerhouse vocals and sincere themes, Sofia Evangelina has us feeling the force of her music instead of merely listening to a song.
