Sofia Dragt – Temporary Gold (2022)
Sofia Dragt drew on the war stories of Herman van Brussel for her single ‘We Remember Now’, telling a story that had more than meets the eye. With her single ‘Temporary Gold’ she moves away from war and into the transience of beauty and a single moment. Through the track, she urges us to appreciate the beauty of a particular moment before it is gone.
Written during a month’s residence in the beautiful town of Isafjordur, Iceland, the single picks up the beauty of Dragt’s surroundings while mourning and rejoicing at the momentary joy it brings. Using field recordings from her time in the town, she creates a unique sound with swells from passing cars and delayed muddy boots for percussion. Through the single, she is able to bring a moment of beauty to life, while tugging at our emotions with the knowledge that they will be gone in the future.
‘Temporary Gold’ slowly builds with a lightly wobbling sound that lifts you into the piano line. There is an airy warble that rests over the piano line, while the muddy boot percussion adds this wonderful shuffle to the melody. The melody perfectly captures a chilly morning where the cold mist hangs over a field and brings a blast of cold air to your lungs as you breathe in. The beauty and peace you feel at the moment are woven into the movement of the melody. You can easily picture a peaceful place you love in your mind and sink into a single beautiful moment there as you listen. The melody has a peaceful and calming flow that relaxes your muscles and has you soaking up happy vibes.
While the melody gently brings you into a peaceful and happy moment, Dragt’s vocals enhance the feeling of peace. Her voice has a whispered quality to it that makes you think of those peaceful moments that you don’t want to disturb with any loud sounds.
