Sofia Dragt – Another One (2020)
Sofia Dragt was a composer even before she began composing professionally. When she was a young girl she would entertain herself by listening to classical records and conducting an imaginary orchestra. It was through this fantastical play that Dragt discovered her passion for music. As I said, she was a composer before she literally began composing. In addition to her musical project, Dragt is a film composer; however, it is her musical endeavours that I wish to highlight here with a specific focus on the new single ‘Another One’.
Yowzers, I said compose a lot in that paragraph!
Written during her trip to the remote Norwegian island of Fleinvaer, ‘Another One’ is a slow, steady and tranquil single. With soft tones, this piano-led single has a somewhat haunting quality with a twinge of melancholy to the melody. However, while a sense of sorrow can be heard, ‘Another One’ is a song of optimism, endurance and empowerment. According to Dragt, the song is about “being in constant development, always looking for new challenges and when that challenge has been completed looking for the new challenge”. Powerful sentiments indeed which should be shouted from the rooftops, but I find Dragt’s breathy vocals emphasise the concept better than any forceful shouting.
What can I really say about ‘Another One’? Sincere, passionate and emotive (to the point of tears), Dragt showcases her skill in composing and singing with this exquisite single.
