So Much 4 Gravity – Gotta Get Out of This Town (2020)

There are a lot of similarities between people in different countries that get overlooked. With their single ‘Gotta Get Out of This Town’, So Much 4 Gravity looks at all the similarities between people from hypocrisy in the higher echelons of society to the daily struggles among the general population. With a catchy chorus complete with standing bass, the single will warm your soul while pushing away the last remnants of wintery cold.

Written by Wouter Vlaminckx (vocals, guitar), Veerle Vlaminckx (vocals, glockenspiel), Frank Willems (bass guitar), Jelle Ghys (keys), Wim Roosen (drums) and Joris Compeers (violin) bring it to life. When Mauz, the band Wouter was in, disbanded, he started to write new songs and formed a new band. Joined by his sister Veerle, it took around a year for this final line-up to solidify.

‘Gotta Get Out of This Town’ draws you into the soundscape with a rather chilled vibe in the opening. The guitar wraps around the violin for an engaging flow that has your head moving to the beats. There is a perfectly blended folk-rock sound to the melody that is enhanced by the sweet violin line that whispers in and haunts the upper levels. The melody has this great forward momentum that hooks into your brain and keeps you engaged. Later in the single are these calling riffs that you can’t help but get lost in.

While the melody is utterly delightful and packed with exquisite layers, the vocals bring their own wonder. The vocals are shared between siblings Wouter and Veerle giving you a two-sided view of the subject. Wouter opens the performance before Veerle takes over, each detailing a situation that you can easily picture. There is a scoffing feeling of annoyance at the hypocrisy of the people highlighted in the lyrics. Through the vocals, you are drawn into situations that are universal and that you can connect with regardless of where you are from.

So Much 4 Gravity looks at all the things that are similar in the world regardless of where you live in ‘Gotta Get Out of This Town’. The folk-rock soundscape is bolstered by sweet violin lines while filling you with delightful momentum. The interplay of vocals adds to the universality of the lyrical experiences while filling you with the emotions of needing to be free.
