Snap Infraction – Keeping Score (2024)

Breathing life into the nostalgic tones of Dodgy, Fleetwood Mac, the Beatles, The Verve and Supergrass, Infraction fuses vintage sounds with contemporary flair. Already on our radar, the US-based threesome can be found alongside some of the more intriguing Britpop and indie-rock bands we have discovered. Yet, while many of those artists made a fleeting impression, Snap Infraction sticks in our memories with their intoxicating style. From their 2017 EP Chin Music to 2021’s ‘Memories of Ourselves’ and 2022’s ‘Repeat Offender’, long-time friends Steve Karsch (vocals and guitar), Dave Kerr (bass and vocals) and Tony Iannuzzi (drums) roll out a sonic feast for all to enjoy. Following the well-received single ‘Christmas In The Islands’, Snap Infraction steps into 2024 with ‘Keeping Score’.

Leading up to their debut full-length album Eephus, ‘Keeping Score’ is a toe-tapping blend of indie-rock with hints of Britpop lingering through the track. Based on ‘Keeping Score’, I might make a comparison to old-school Dodgy; however, the intricate composition and fusion of different rock styles make Snap Infraction distinctive. Does that make sense?

As with previous material, bold drums meet powerful guitars and rich vocals with sophistication harmony and disconcerting fractures. A smooth sense of rock links the instruments in ‘Keeping Score’; however, the arrangement allows each band member to show his stuff within the mellifluous symphony. Iannuzzi’s drums flow from pounding and crashing to a sincere steadiness in the song’s foundation. Kerr’s bass slices through the melody yet aligns with the warm calm. Now, Karsch brings a double-whammy with his guitar slicking the arrangement with hard-hitting riffs; however, it too builds a wall of rhythmic rock. Moreover, Karsch’s gruff vocals bind ‘Keeping Score’ with endearing tenderness and brash intimacy.

The melody sparks in its comfortable lull adding a refreshing beat to the heart-warming familiarity of indie-rock. The thing is, while the melody is intriguing it is the lyricism that showcases the band’s profoundness. With the lyrics, “What will they say about me/ I don’t know cause I’m not keeping score anymore”, Snap Infraction enter a place of vulnerability. Self-reflection of reality’s perception is soul-baring but the empowerment and hopefulness of “not caring about what people say” is uplifting – all pieced together in ‘Keeping Score’.
