Snakedoctors (ft. Nik Hughes) – Brighter (2023)

For approximately three years, Polish foursome Snakedoctors have been sharing their intriguing rock music with the world. From the acclaimed album Obligation (released in 2020) to ‘Wuss’, ‘Crime Story’, and ‘Too Many’, Snakedoctors garnered a loyal following across five continents with coverage from notable publications, playlists and live performances. In an interview with RGM, the band share that they create music for fun – “…it’s like the best hobby you can possibly have”; however, their music is so much more than a hobby touching people on a deeper, intimate level. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Brighter’.

Following the single ‘Destroyed’, ‘Brighter’ weaves together elements of grunge, hard rock and alt-rock in a heavy, hard-hitting melody. Leaning towards the alternative rock sounds of the 90s, there is a reminiscence to Creed and Three Days Grace, but a distinctive gruffness is heard in ‘Brighter’. Recorded with producers Dawid Gorgolewski and Stephen Marcussen at Osso Studio, the single is beautifully textured with pounding drums and dynamic drums. One aspect I find intriguing is how each instrument has a bold presence in a harmonic, albeit gruff, whole.

While the melody can capture your heart and take you on an emotional sonic journey, it is the vocals that add a palpable grittiness to ‘Brighter’. Collaborating once again with vocalist Nik Hughes (drummer from Bush), the single weighs on your chest with an overwhelming heaviness. Yet, despite the crushing sensation of ‘Brighter’, the melody melds with Hughes’ rich vocals taking you on a rollercoaster of sound and emotion. Moreover, Snakedoctors deceive you as the melancholic hard tone of ‘Brighter’ hides the lighter, happier theme of “how brighter days are going to arrive finally after the dark times…”

Sincere, sentimental and oozing vulnerable intimacy, Snakedoctors take us through the shadow of darkness to a hopeful light at the end of a long tunnel with ‘Brighter’.
