Sloe Honey – Torch (2023)

Influenced by artists like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Aaliyah and Depeche Mode, it makes sense that singer-songwriter Sloe Honey’s sound would be wistful, tender and a little ethereal. Born to a musical family, it was likely that Honey would follow in the footsteps of her mother. In an interview with RGM, she shared that she decided to pursue music as a career “because nothing else gives me this deep sense of peace and connection to all things.” Despite emerging post-Covid in late-2022 with only a few singles under her belt, Sloe Honey is reaching audiences across the globe. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Torch’.

The brainchild of musician Melissa Trinchere, Sloe Honey is an ethereal artist with an alternative-pop meets neo-soul style. Following her track ‘Lovesick’, ‘Torch’ is not only the second single from Trinchere in 2023 but the second track from her upcoming album Lovesick. As with her previous material, Trinchere’s bold vocals stand out with a powerhouse tone and masterful quality.

Soulful, seductive and intriguing, there is a smoothness layered into her dulcet voice. Yet, while the seductiveness of ‘Lovesick’ exists in the charmingly elegant vocals, the melody is entirely different adopting a folk sound in ‘Torch’. I find this particularly intriguing as it highlights Trinchere’s signature sound but also versatility touching on various genres in her music.

An acoustic-inspired single, ‘Torch’ has a toe-tapping, head-bopping traditional folk style perfectly executed with a combination of fiddle and piano. Interestingly enough, just as the jovial bounciness is smile-inducing, a thread of vulnerability twists about the melody stomping intense intimacy with the slower, softer, tender choruses.

While the melody is exciting and awe-inspiring, it is the lyricism that brings out a Tori Amos intensity. Trinchere explains that ‘Torch’ “…is an indie-folk tale that takes place in the old west. It’s a journey of a woman who still ‘carries a torch’ for the one she loves and is totally obsessed with. She is unapologetic about holding onto deep feelings for someone whether they reciprocate or not…I wanted to present this as seeking a community of like-minded romantics that love love and are not ashamed of putting people on a pedestal from time to time.”
