Skye Matlock – Hands (2023)

Combining gritty melodies with honest lyrics, singer-songwriter Skye Matlock seduces listeners using a rough, rugged, raw brand of music. Hailing from the USA, Matlock established herself as a natural talent performing with local acts around New York City. While her stage presence is electric, her solo project really took off when she released her debut single ‘Dominique’ earlier this year. With only two tracks beneath her belt (at least according to Spotify), Matlock might be a newbie on the streaming scene, but she is by no means a push-over. Come with us as we delve into her intriguing music.

On the heels of her single ‘Dominique’, Skye Matlock releases her sophomore single ‘Hands’. The second track off her upcoming self-titled debut album, ‘Hands’ lies somewhere between Nirvana and Radiohead. The bold drums merge with gritty guitars creating something grungy and full of grime but in a good way. Unlike ‘Dominique’ where you are placed in a swirl of grunge-inspired madness, ‘Hands’ is a bit more “in your face” with a skin-chilling punch in the guts. Listening to the song is like trudging along an empty road with a terrible hangover but still sipping whiskey…once again, it’s in a good way.

While the melody can hold its own as something I am unlikely to forget, it is the lyricism of ‘Hands’ that really makes the song memorable. Touching on feelings of anxiety, confusion and despair, the distorted symphony crawls beneath your skin. Matlock explains that “’Hands’ is the result of picking up my bass guitar instead of my journal when I was in a state of distress. I figured I’d expose my internal feelings in the best way I know how, through lyrics and loads of distortion.”

‘Hands’ might be a sonic wrapper of “what the hell just happened” grunge but there is a sincerity lurking throughout making it sentimental and scary. I highly recommend Skye Matlock and foresee a bright future for her with those dark melodies.
