Skyddsnätet – Förgörelsen (2021)

Toxic relationships and mental health do not gel and there are a lot of issues that come from them mixing. Skyddsnätet is delving into this with their single ‘Förgörelsen’ which looks at a relationship where your partner makes you doubt your mental health. With a rightfully emotional mood, the single brings a streak of hope as you realise you need to escape the relationship.

Drawing on the personal experience of Alexander Avelin (bass, vocals), the stormy turbulence of the single is brought to life with bandmates Christoffer Englund (vocals, keys, guitar, piano) and Erik Östholm (drums, vocals). The trio used to play in a band with another artist, but their creative drives differed leading to them writing their own songs. While each drawn to a different style of music, they combine them for an engaging and emotive sound.

‘Förgörelsen’ has a really soft opening that is all expansive melodics and wide-open spaces. The beats that rise from the depths gently vibrate through your senses before the strings meet them. As the strings by Tomas Ebrelius come in, they add a theatrical richness to the track. There is an amazing melding of different styles with the crashes of the instrumentation and the emotive pulses of the strings. While you are drawn to the epic rushes of the melody, there is a building later in the track that brings you to a crest of positivity and brightness that is enthralling.

While Englund’s vocal performance is in Swedish, this only adds to the epic feeling of the track. You don’t need to understand the lyrics to feel the emotive movement and see the story of the single. His performance is so emotive that you can feel the depressing feelings of doubt and the oppression of a toxic relationship. When the melody starts to build, his vocals match and you can sense the change in the emotions of the relationship and the streak of hope that this brings.

Skyddsnätet tackles toxic relationships and mental health with the epic flows of ‘Förgörelsen’. While the single is in Swedish, you don’t need to know the language to understand the emotion of the track. From the melody to the vocals, each element builds a clear picture of the doubts and streaks of hope people in toxic relationships go through.
