SkyCall – Are You Ready Now? (2024)

A few years ago, in 2019 to be precise, Fabrice Duval, Luc Erwin and Didier Hoffman began the France-based group SkyCall. In 2021, a lineup change occurred, and by 2023 the band had dissolved. The saying goes that you can never keep a good man (or woman) down, and SkyCall is the proof. Instead of sitting back and carrying on, singer-songwriter Duval picked up his rockstar kit and released several singles as the solo SkyCall. We were introduced to him last month with ‘Amy’, and today we delve into the new single ‘Are You Ready Now?’.

Known for his classic rock sound, SkyCall drags listeners back to the days of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jim Morrison. Breathing life into the iconic rock of yesteryear, Duval joins the silvery thread of rock music across space, time, distance and generations. In ‘Amy’, there was a lilt toward Jefferson Airplane with a click of The Doors; however, ‘Are You Ready Now?’ brings a heavier tone to our ears.

Recorded, produced and performed by Duval, with mastering by Alexandros Chrysidis at Sierra Studios in Greece, ‘Are You Ready Now?’ is a concoction of hard-hitting guitars, a bold bass, crashing drums and Duval’s silky vocals. As with retro rock songs, a soaring guitar takes centre stage in a rollercoaster solo stealing your breath with its chaotic frenzy. Yet, the quick rush of madness found in Duval’s guitar is simultaneously mind-blowing and calming in richness and warmth.

As with ‘Amy’ and ‘Wendy’, Duval’s music is immersive painting a vivid picture of its profound theme. ‘Are You Ready Now?’ is a twirl of kaleidoscopic sound sending you spinning with reckless abandon; however, you are held in a warm embrace enjoying every second of the whirlpool. Oscillating from dark to light, tragedy to bliss, ‘Are You Ready Now?’ captures the grittiness of romantic relationships in a thrill-seeking society. Duval explains:

“’Are You Ready Now?’ delves into the theme of elusive love, where the avoidance of commitment is masked by inauthenticity. This fool’s game is the domain of those who treat life as if it were played on a roulette mat; winning or losing is irrelevant, it’s the game and the thrill it provides that matter…”
