Sky McKee – Anita (I’m Losing) (2024)

Always optimistic, always empowering, and always the light at the end of the tunnel – Sky McKee brings heartfelt lightness to any troubled soul in his music. Alright, this is my introduction to the singer-songwriter, but hearing McKee’s songs has the comfort of an old friendship with the intrigue of a new acquaintance. Turning heads on an international scale, McKee is critically acclaimed in numerous countries from Germany and the UK to the US and Portugal. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Anita (I’m Losing)’.

Following his well-received single ‘Broken Beyond Belief’, ‘Anita (I’m Losing)’ once again tackles difficult themes with personal narratives and a reflective folk tone. Yet, while the strong folk tone is evident in his music, innovative originality and eclectic authenticity prove him a genre-diverse artist. ‘Broken Beyond Belief’ fused hits of bedroom pop with folk, and ‘Anita (I’m Losing)’ finds the line between indie-folk and indie-pop before blurring it entirely. Fun, free and smile-inducing, the infectious tones juxtapose melancholy and mellifluousness.

Produced by Braden Lawrence and Derek Ted, ‘Anita (I’m Losing)’ is a sophisticated tune but with a rough edge. No, not rough as in abrupt, brash or gritting; rather rough capturing human fragility and vulnerability with an acoustic guitar. Filled with duality, McKee couples the intricate concoction of sophistication and fragility with feelings of resilience and hope. Inspired by his mother’s lifelong friend, the song explores the painfulness of love and loss with cherished relationships ending but understanding the struggles of life’s imperfections. McKee explains:

“I always wanted an Anita in my life, but I can’t stop losing them. This song is about coming to grips with the fact that things will never look the way I had hoped and how hard of a blow it is for a close friend to die suddenly.

Sincere, sentimental, charming and honest, ‘Anita (I’m Losing)’ is filled with heart-warming tenderness. I cannot wait for more from this talented artist.
