Sky Canyon – Bluesalicious (2022)

Drawing on over 40 years of professional music experience, Sky Canyon is unleashing his original jazz compositions that are sure to have you heading out to your nearest jazz bar. ‘Bluesalicious’ is the latest, bringing a classic jazz and blues sound to a decadent instrumental soundscape. Played with a quartet of A-list musicians, the single will have you getting down to its groove long before it is over.

A veteran of the music industry, Sky Canyon’s love for jazz started at an early age and grew as he studied with the jazz vibraphone master, Terry Gibbs. It is this tutelage that has inspired his recent releases as he heads back to jazz originals and some classic structures. Over the years, he has played as the principal percussionist in symphony orchestras and played in the world of rock music.

The shining light tones that open ‘Bluesalicious’ create a happy and bright feeling to the single. The twang of the bass thrums beautifully in your chest as the line of vibraphone dances with a skip across your senses. The piano joins the light notes to create a friendly dance that leads you into the jazzier vibes of the single. The shuffle of the drums gets your feet tapping to the rhythm, while those two higher lines continue their merry dance down the track. It is almost like the vibraphone and piano are singing to each other as they interact and draw you into their conversation. The conversation between the two lines gets a funkier vibe as the track continues, leading to you bouncing more as you listen to it.

While the vibraphone dominates a lot of the opening half of the single, the piano comes into its own around the mid mark. The piano solo run is stunning to listen to and really has you getting down to its groove. Beneath all of this, that jazzy shuffle of drums keeps you bopping and tapping to the rhythm. The piano line leads you to the bass solo which is something you don’t often get to appreciate outside of classic jazz tracks. Throughout the single, you can hear the touches of classic jazz structures that highlight the power of each instrument.

Sky Canyon has you bouncing around and tapping away to the jazzy vibes of ‘Bluesalicious’ as he fills you with the need for some good jazz. The instrumental track is a pleasure to listen to as the piano and vibraphone dance, while the bass and shuffling drums get you bopping. Whether you are into jazz or not, this is a single that is sure to hook you to its sound.
