Sisyphes – Au Carrefour (2021)

Sisyphes is taking a step away from their expansive sound for their release ‘Au Carrefour’. The first track from a new batch of songs that lead listeners to their EP Cargo Cult, it tuns to more retro tones with a splash of jazz arrangement. Through the track, listeners are taken in a melancholic look back on life and the question of where the path already walked will lead.

While melancholic, there are some pleasant vibes woven into the sound that brings deeply personal themes to light. All of this is infused with the alternative pop sound that Geoffrey Papin has created for this musical project. With this track, he captures something that speaks to all of us on a profound level while getting you excited for what is still to come.

‘Au Carrefour’ bubbles to life with an almost whimsical guitar line. The whimsy of the opening is enhanced by the light bell tones that chime in the higher levels. The layering of the opening leads you into the chanting of the vocals and the light jazz arrangement. The floating whimsical tones give way to a flowing movement that has this great forward momentum that gets your skipping down the soundscape. This is tinged with vintage tones and jazz horns that add texture and richness to the reminiscing feeling of the music. As the single progresses, there is a light touch of melancholy added to the music.

The vocals open with the chanting line that the light tones of the melody lead you to. This chanting comes from a distance and beckons you closer. Papin’s vocals enter as a reflective line that is as light as those chiming bells. The lyrics are in French but you can feel the reflective vibes of the song through the performance. Through the vocals, you can feel the reflection on what has been and the wondering sense of what will come in the future. This is woven into some seriously pleasant vibes that have you swaying to the rhythm of the single and sinking into the sound.

Sisyphes has you swaying to the pleasant vibes of ‘Au Carrefour’ before dipping into the melancholy and reflection of the single. The light touch of the melody moves from whimsical to jazzy while keeping you moving down the soundscape. While the lyrics are in French, the vocal performance fills you with the reflection, questioning and overall vibes of the track.
