Sister Envy – Swallowed By The Ground (2025)

Emerging from the rugged and enigmatic North Wales coast, Sister Envy return with their third single, ‘Swallowed By The Ground’, and it’s their most immediate and striking work yet. A thrilling fusion of soaring space rock and introspective lyricism, this track cements the band’s growing reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting alternative acts.

From the opening notes, ‘Swallowed By The Ground’ propels the listener into an exhilarating sonic landscape. Nimble, chiming guitars shimmer over relentless, nagging basslines and cycling drums, creating an atmospheric yet urgent momentum. The true driving force, however, is frontman Kameron Jolliffe’s impassioned vocal performance – equal parts vulnerability and cathartic release. His introspective lyrics paint a vivid picture of a relationship unravelling, culminating in an unforgettable chorus that demands to be played at full volume.

There’s a distinct lineage in Sister Envy’s sound, paying homage to the expansive textures of early Verve, the unfiltered energy of Smashing Pumpkins, and the raw intensity of Nirvana. Yet, rather than simply echoing their influences, they carve out a space uniquely their own, weaving together the ethereal and the ferocious with remarkable finesse. The result is a track that feels both familiar and refreshingly new. A testament to the band’s ability to balance nostalgia with innovation.

‘Swallowed By The Ground’ was recorded at Liverpool’s legendary Motor Museum Studio with Ben Harper, before being mixed in France by Welsh visionary Owain Ginsberg and mastered in Austin, Texas, by Erik Wofford (The Black Angels). The global production effort only enhances the track’s widescreen ambition, refining its sound while retaining its visceral edge.

Speaking about the track, Jolliffe revealed, “I had the main riff lying around for a while and didn’t really touch it, though I really liked it. We started jamming it in a rehearsal, and the song pretty much wrote itself. It quickly became one of our favourite songs to play together.” That organic chemistry is palpable; there’s a spontaneity and electricity to the recording that suggests a band hitting its creative stride.

With previous singles ‘Tide’ and ‘Mourning Sickness’ already turning heads – gaining praise from Louder Than War, So Young Magazine, and BBC Radio X’s John Kennedy – Sister Envy are proving themselves as serious contenders in the alt-rock landscape. Their music channels the beauty and isolation of their North Wales home, transforming it into something cathartic and universal.

As the band gears up for a series of releases and live shows throughout 2025, ‘Swallowed By The Ground’ is a statement of intent. Fierce yet dreamlike, immediate yet immersive, it’s the sound of a band destined for much bigger things.
