Sinikka Monte – Dead End (2022)
Growing up with the sounds of Hannah Montana and Justin Bieber blasting through her speakers, singer-songwriter Sinikka Monte has the flair of Miley Cyrus with the power of Ariana Grande. Yet, while she is influenced by these established acts, there is a certain distinctiveness to Monte’s style with her powerful, rich and bold sound. With her diverse cultural heritage, the Scotland-born Finnish-South African musician, who now resides in Austria, is turning heads across the globe. Not only is she receiving features on notable music blogs, but she received 3rd prize in the Songwriting Awards of the Austrian Composers’ Association, had two songs reach the semi-finals of the International Songwriting Competition and much more. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Dead End’.
Following her critically acclaimed EP Deadlocked, ‘Dead End’ is a contemporary pop song with a darker undertone. Synth-driven, the single can easily be placed alongside acts like Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande; however, a deeper, rougher and almost grungy sound is woven into the melodic arrangement. Interestingly enough, while ‘Dead End’ has an edgier tone, it is also soothing, soft and flowing in its gritty way – does that make sense? I suppose this is where Monte’s distinct sound lies.
One thing I find particularly intriguing about ‘Dead End’ is not the palpable grittiness of the melody, but the movement from upbeat pop to a slower, almost drawn-out vocal ending. It is this transition that shows Monte’s versatility and eclecticism as an artist. Moreover, this switch is an apt expression of the desperate theme of an ending relationship. Monte explains that ‘Dead End’ is a “love story that could have been great but ended in betrayal…the pain derails you and you feel paralysed for months. You wonder if it was something you did…”
Sincere, sentimental and brutally honest, Sinikka Monte explores human fragility in this intimate new song.
