SINGBABYSING – An Incense Burns (2022)
With their single ‘An Incense Burns’, SINGBABYSING drops us into a single moment in a relationship. Through the unconventional structure of the single, the band looks at the moment when you make the decision to commit to someone and support them through tough times. This moment is brought to life with the help of Fearn who co-produced the track.
The moniker of songwriter Harry James Gibson, SINGBABYSING found that this single came naturally as they tried to create a song with unconventional structures, while retaining immense emotion. Since starting this musical project in 2021, his debut EP was picked up by BBC Introducing South East and received regular airtime. While that set the tone of what is to come, this single cements his place as an artist to keep your eye on.
‘An Incense Burns’ has a dreamy touch to the opening as it gently tickles across your senses. The drum has the lightest shuffle to the sound as it calls to your muscles to lightly bop to its sound. Floating between the drumline is a dreamy, almost hazy, melody that is cotton soft. You can easily sink into the melody and allow it to take you on a floating adventure. There are some interesting changes in the overall flow of the melody that has you rounding bends of sound, but the gentleness of the sound remains true. The guitars that strum into life later in the track add an organic texture to the sound, before dropping for the vocals to take over. While it is an unconventional structure, the eclectic movement of the melody is rather addictive.
As you float to the soft sounds of the unconventional melody, the vocals sigh overhead. They are a gentle ruffling of your hair by the wind as they bring the coolest touch to your skin on a hot day. There is a soothing flow to the vocals as they melodically caress your senses and lift your spirits. Through the lyrics, you are dropped into a moment of decision in a relationship, but there is a feeling that the decision is a foregone conclusion. Rich in affection, the vocal performance leaves a warm ember glowing in your chest that relaxes your muscles. Later in the track, there is a change to the performance that matches the movement of the melody to complete the eclectic structure of the track.
Through the mellow vibes of ‘An Incense Burns’, SINGBABYSING fills your chest with affection as he drops you into a moment of decision in a relationship. There is an unconventional movement to the melody, but this has been masterfully handled to create a melodic flow. The softness of the music enhances the sigh of the vocals for a warm, endearing and relaxing single.
