Simon Lynge – Age Of Distraction (2018)
Simon Lynge is a Danish soul singer from Greenland who has been making quite the splash in the music industry. He is the first solo artist from Greenland to have an album released in the United Kingdom. In addition, Lynge is the first of his countrymen to play Glastonbury music festival. Simon grew up in both Greenland and Denmark and got his start in his church’s choir. His influences and inspiration come from classic rock big names such as Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Crosby, Stills and Nash, as well as Simon and Garfunkel.
The single ‘Age of Distraction’ is an indie and soulful song. It has a slower beat of drums, acoustic guitars and keyboards. I can also hear the sound of a tambourine throughout the song.
To me ‘Age of Distraction’ is about everything going on in today’s society. We are so focused on all these political and social issues that we’re losing sight of how simple society can be. These issues, while important and worthy of discussion, have played more of a role in our lives than they should.
Cracks are getting deeper, storms are getting bigger feel like we’re living in the eye of a hurricane. We vote for leaders, killers and deceivers.
This lyric seems as if it’s describing the issues all countries and societies face within their respective political systems. We’re electing people who are able to get away with things they shouldn’t be. By electing these officials, we are causing a division within our countries, as well as with other countries, making people have to choose sides.
While I enjoyed this song, it came across more political than what I’m used to. I think Lynge expresses his views in a way that isn’t forceful or subtle. I also feel the song title is appropriate with the message Lynge is trying to get across.
In addition to ‘Age of Distraction’, Lynge has two albums and two EPs titled The Map of Your Life, The Absence of Fear, Beyond My Skin, and 6 Sketches. Simon also has three other singles called ‘Infinitely You (new version)’, ‘If You Go’ and ‘Infinitely You’.
