Silverbird – Wasn’t Born To Follow (2023)

Beginning as the solo project of singer-songwriter Otto Steiner, Silverbird quickly grew to a kaleidoscopic, unique trio. Based in Germany, Silverbird proves they are not a one-trick pony slithering from rock and pop to nu-metal and folk. While this is our introduction to the band, Silverbird has been turning heads for over a decade featuring on Edgar Allan Poets, Roadie Music, FV Music Blog, Indie Dock Music Blog and various playlists. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single ‘Wasn’t Born To Follow’.

Following their singles ‘Open The Door’ and ‘Emotion’, Silverbird blast into 2023 with ‘Wasn’t Born To Follow’. Embracing the essence of the DIY ethos, Silverbird composed, recorded, arranged and produced all of their songs. Unlike ‘Open The Door’, the new tune fuses elements of rock and folk with tinges of traditional Spanish sounds. Dynamic guitars meet pounding drums in a hard-hitting melody; however, it is the Spanish-inspired guitar trills meeting classic rock riffs that add something special to ‘Wasn’t Born To Follow’.

Known for their versatility and diversity in sound, Silverbird paint with a kaleidoscopic sonic palette. Wrapping you in these bold colours, ‘Wasn’t Born To Follow’ sends your soul soaring on a glistening sonic river. Yet, while the surface of the river is smooth, tumultuous waves can be seen but not experienced. A hint of angst dwells in the single, however, the soothing tones make this a gentle, mellifluous ride.

One aspect I find interesting is how the song is flowing but with a gentle push and pull. Soft and soothing but dark and melancholic, ‘Wasn’t Born To Follow’ is far more poignant than it initially appears. Silverbird explains that ‘Wasn’t Born To Follow’ “reflects the life situation of a former friend after a major cut in his life. He was fed up with always having to be considerate of others and decided to go his own way.”

Sincere, sentimental and smooth but with a bite to the track, Silverbird prove they were born to lead in ‘Wasn’t Born To Follow’.
