Silja Rós – …real love (2024)

Singer, songwriter, actress and scriptwriter, Icelandic artist Silja Rós wears many hats but it all comes down to one thing: art. Her love for performing arts oozes from her music and acting, keeping people enthralled and enchanted. Yes, the elegant face and brooding eyes can steal your heart; however, it is her skill that shines bright so you can’t help but stare (in a good way). As an actress, her repertoire includes the role of Thumbelina in Thumbelina Musical, Lady Fidget in Country Wife, and Sara in the Icelandic film Redux. We’re here to take a gander at the musical side of things, so join me as I delve into Silja Rós’ discography.

Inspired by the likes of Jacob Collier, Olivia Dean and Frank Ocean, Rós’ sound swirls harmonic RnB with alternative pop and a large slathering of soul. Following her well-received EP The way u…, Rós taps her hat at old-school RnB reminiscent of Erykah Badu and Toni Braxton with vintage jazz of Sade flitting through the new single ‘…real love’. Interestingly, while this is a nostalgic trip back to the 80s/90s, Rós stands as an individual with a sound that is entirely Silja Rós and no one else.

Easily placed as the headline act in a smoky jazz club, Rós exudes raw sensuality in ‘…real love’. Whether this is the aim, I’m not sure, but it gives audiences an insight into pure emotion, heartfelt vulnerability and sincere tenderness. Rós explains:

“I wrote ‘…real love’ about my time in LA where I lived for a couple of years. I lived in the same building as many of my friends, so the vibe was kind of like in Friends. We had a rooftop pool, and it was easy to forget the time there. The energy was amazing, we were all following our dreams but at the same time enjoying every moment of it. Now we look back and have these great memories from that time of life. The song is about that feeling, enjoying a warm summer day with your friends and forgetting the time. Being young and wild and free.”
