Silcrow – Keep The Silence (2022)

Raw, energetic and blisteringly hard-hitting, New Zealand four-piece Silcrow brings a modern-day twist to loud classic rock. Blending elements of grunge, metal, blues and even funk into their alternative rock, the lads are making a noise to captivate audiences across the globe. With a steady following built in New Zealand, Silcrow is establishing itself as a firm figure among its peers; and the coverage from blogs and playlists doesn’t hurt at all. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Keep The Silence’.

Following their three-track EP Close To The Bone, Silcrow thread melodic metal through early-2000s alternative rock in ‘Keep The Silence’. Lying somewhere between Seether and Three Days Grace, the band hit you in the chest with their well-textured song. Pounding drums fuse with dynamic guitars building an almost palpable grunginess to the track. Yet, while the grungy arrangement stands firm, the layering of Lorenzo Hazelwood’s vocals unveils a burning light beneath.

It’s true, the melody can subdue even the heaviest hard rock/metal fan with headbanging ease; however, rich vocals make for a smoother, more soothing approach. Rich, bold and warm, Hazelwood’s dulcet tones grab you by the hand leading you through a hazy sonic forest. The thing is, while the melody highlights the band’s versatility, their lyricism showcases depth.

“’Keep The Silence’ was written just before we entered a very tumultuous period. Dealing with Covid lockdown restrictions in NZ and downsizing to a four-piece band, knowing we had this song in our repertoire of new music was part of the glue that kept us together during a time we could have easily fallen apart…” – Silcrow on ‘Keep The Silence’

So, what do I honestly think of Silcrow and ‘Keep The Silence’? The sophistication and elegance of the track remind me of far more established and experienced bands. However, while there is sophistication in ‘Keep The Silence’, there is also a raw innocence bursting through. Overall, I love it!
