Side 4 Collective – Me & Vincent (2025)

Spearheaded by renowned Irish drummer Dave Hingerty, Side 4 Collective draws together the musical talents of various Irish and international artists “…sculpting songs from scratch using Hingerty’s pre-written melodic and primal drum patterns.” Sad to say, despite his long-standing musical career, this is my first time hearing Dave Hingerty – where have I been? Ensnaring the senses of international audiences, this singer-songwriter, photographer, blogger, and lecturer is a notable talent bringing life to different areas of creativity. Join me as we delve into Side 4 Collective and their single, ‘Me & Vincent’.

Following the collaborative 2024 single, ‘Four Letters’, ‘Me & Vincent’ combines the talents of musicians Colm Quearny, Keith Margo and Dave Hingerty. Produced by Quearny, Margo and Hingerty, with Anthony Gibney (mixing) and Ruadhri Cushnan (mastering), the single is… well, it’s a cacophony of sounds that is anything but pedestrian. Not necessarily leaning toward a single style, flecks of folk, indie-rock, power-pop, reggae and even a tilt of soul fuse with kaleidoscopic zeal.

A strong vintage flavour, ‘Me & Vincent’ fits perfectly into the folk-rock scene of the 1960s and 1970s; think The Mamas & The Papas meets The Byrds…. well, something like that. Dynamic drums, a hard-hitting guitar, bold bass and piano entwine with elegant charm, whilst fluttering into the flood of percussion underlying the melody. Interestingly, as much as the single oozes harmonic unity of the various elements, individuality reigns making every instrument as prominent and significant as the next.

Melodically, you can lose yourself head, heart and soul in ‘Me & Vincent’; however, it is the lyricism that seems to elevate the sparkling vibrancy of the track. A song to celebrate the youth of Dublin, ‘Me & Vincent’ is warm and rich, but also piercing with optimistic light. Hingerty explains:

“‘Me & Vincent’ is a love letter to the urban and suburban communities of Dublin. The youth are the life and soul, humour and character of our beautiful city. The protagonists in the song’s lyrics are on a fun journey that pays homage to how Dublin Youth bring a sense of adventure and colour to our city.”
