Shobsy – Champagne (2024)
A few months ago, we were introduced to the Irish singer-songwriter Shobsy with his single ‘ENTERTAINMENT’. As with his international fanbase and audience, he turned our heads, and we were quickly enthralled by the eclectic artist. With a confident smile and electric presence, Shobsy has made his way across the globe performing at notable venues with established artists and was even invited as a special guest to the International Music Industry Person of the Year awards in Los Angeles. Add his recent signing to Pangea International Music Publishing, and you have an artist set for stardom with a loyal fanbase singing along.
Following his critically acclaimed singles ‘The Way We Are’ and ‘ENTERTAINMENT’, Shobsy saunters from disco to electropop in ‘Champagne’. While the track certainly drags me back to the funk-filled vibe of the 70s, I find my feet firmly planted on the ground with shimmering synths wistfully fluttering past my face. Familiar but fresh, retro but modern, Shobsy finds the shimmering sonic thread across time, generations, styles and eras in his new single.
The melody is charmingly simple with its wash of bold beats and light-hearted synths; however, there is an obscure duality of profoundness, carefreeness, laughter and grimaces floating in the song. Looking at the dizziness and fun-filled allure of a night drowning in some bubbly, there is joviality in the pop-tinted tones. Add Shobsy’s rich vocals, and it’s like reliving a grin-filled party; then again, a smidgeon of seriousness lingers in the background with its vulnerability… then again, why ruin the fun and laughter with sadness? Shobsy explains:
“’Champagne’ is a dizzy and disorientating pop song about late nights becoming early mornings… sometimes a little more often than they should. But much like its sister single ‘ENTERTAINMENT’, one should not read too far into that side of things. This is a love song dedicated to Champagne…”
