Shellshock Lullaby – Garffeeld! (2024)
Technically formed in 2011 by three well-versed musicians from the Montana region, Shellshock Lullaby drew together various flavours of rock in their sound. With over 30 years combined experience, Russell Nelson, Hannah Skiles, and Andrew Ellmaker established themselves as a captivating act on the US rock scene. In 2018, Shellshock Lullaby ran its course and disbanded, but you can’t keep a good thing down and skipping ahead a few years, Nelson (vocals, guitar, bass and drums) and AJ Puckett (guitar) decided to step up and make a comeback. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Garffeeld!’.
While Shellshock Lullaby has had several members over the years, many of these older tunes making it onto the 2024 album Blue, ‘Garffeeld!’ is the stand-out single representing its return. Self-recorded and produced, the track is a blast back 20 years to 2000s emo pop-rock shimmering with the brashness of pop-punk, and 90s alternative rock flairs. The thing is, while you imagine a high-voltage energetic rush of music, ‘Garffeeld!’ has an intricate arrangement with an all-consuming sonic rollercoaster.
Not merely a joy for the ears, ‘Garffeeld!’ is one of those songs in which you easily lose yourself – you know, those that you twirl about to, revel in and find it odd that the song ended so soon. From the pounding drums to bold bass and searing guitars, each chord brings on another flash of light in the kaleidoscopic whirlpool. Crashing about in rambunctious pop-rock flow, ‘Garffeeld!’ is somewhat chaotic; however, within the chaos lies harmony holding you tight in the musical madness.
The melody itself is soul-stirring but, for me at least, it is Nelson’s vocals that bind everything while slithering through the intricate tune. A delicate exploration of lost love and relationships, ‘Garffeeld!’ brings the light-heartedness of falling for someone who loves Garfield memes to the tragedy of lost connections. Shellshock Lullaby explains:
