Sharoo – Japan (2024)

I was once told that constant evolution is essential for a better life, stagnation is the key to demise. I can’t remember who said that to me, but the truth that emanates from these few words is entirely soul-stirring, shocking and “in the face brutal honesty” – or at least that’s my opinion.

A musician who continuously aims to find that eternal truth is US-based Sharoo. He shares, “I have a side of myself that’s more intricate and distinct than the one I usually show to the world… whether I’m portraying my everyday self or my more bold and intrepid aspects, I continuously seek to unravel the truth of who I am.” It is this philosophical foundation that oozes through his insightful melodies. One of the most recent additions to his discography is the single ‘Japan’.

Following his 2019 single ‘Facts’, ‘Japan’ is Sharoo’s first release in five years (or at least according to Spotify). As with ‘Facts’, the new single embraces a genre-fusing eclecticism traversing different styles and even different decades. Leaning toward 2000s RnB, Sharoo’s bold vocals bring rich warmth to the track; however, a slip of 90s rap breaks through with artist Trae7. The fusion of RnB and rap is intriguing, but the inclusion of Asian instruments brings further edginess to ‘Japan’.

Recorded and produced in California by RCKY, ‘Japan’ takes listeners on a kaleidoscopic walk through a sonic forest – exciting and adventurous but with a slight haunting prompting deep vulnerability. Penned alongside industry professionals Danish Idris, Jamar Nolan, Nikhil Raj, Ramez Wakileh and Ranveer Uppal, Sharoo captures the intensity of human fragility through the song’s moving lyricism. He explains:

“’Japan’ reminds us of all of the devastations that come from being vulnerable with the wrong person… the main purpose of this track… is just the overall notion of trust and that even the people who are closest to you are sometimes the ones who can turn against you…”
