Shae Brock – The Canyon (2022)
Described by Punk Head as being a “phenomenal writer immersing the melancholic atmosphere of storytelling into her sound”, Shae Brock connects with audiences on intimate levels. Featured on Punk Head, KMS Reviews, Edgar Allan Poets, Indie Dock Music Blog and various playlists, US-based Shae Brock is gaining coverage on an international scale. From her single ‘Mary Jane’ to her EP Was It Real Or In My Mind?, The Other Side Reviews has followed the talented songstress with bated breath and increased interest. The latest addition to Shae Brock’s well-received repertoire is the single ‘The Canyon’.
Following ‘Snake In The Garden’ – a collaborative single with Lou Ella – Shae Brock merges elements of folk-pop, indie-rock and contemporary pop in ‘The Canyon’. Tossing you into a swirl of kaleidoscopic sound, ‘The Canyon’ uses different movements to not only represent different emotions but tell a story. Each transition from the soothing pop to hard-hitting rock, Shae Brock blends guitar riffs, pounding drums, calming piano and silky vocals sliding along the cinematic soundscape.
Filled with intense intimacy, ‘The Canyon’ has an overwhelmingly emotive melody, however, it is the personal narrative that connects with audiences on a deeper level. Penned at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, ‘The Canyon’ was tucked away in her notebook until Brock decided to record it as a B-side to Was It Real Or In My Mind? Brock shares that ‘The Canyon’ is “…about falling in love but neither one of the two saying it first, therefore, it was never said at all.” Heart-warming and reflective, but with melancholic nostalgia, this lack of communication can break relationships even though the underlying message of love would have saved it.
Touching on human fragility in a sincere and sentimental way, ‘The Canyon’ has an introspective quality that will get stuck in your head for days to come. I cannot wait for more from this talented singer-songwriter.
