SERENA – Lipstick On A Glass (2023)
From her bold, confident performances to songwriting collaborations, podcasts and producing original material, UK-based SERENA has a flair for the obscure, energetic and eclectic. Constantly evolving, Italian-born SERENA embraces pop of all flavours creating things that blend tinges of electropop, indie-pop alternative pop, pop-rock and funky grooves. From ‘Painkillers’ in 2017 to ‘Heartworm’ in 2022, SERENA has turned heads across the globe with coverage on York Calling, It’s All Indie, Mesmerzied and Less Than 1000 Followers (to name a few). The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Lipstick On A Glass’.
Polishing her songwriting and composition skills at the prestigious British Institute for Modern Music, SERENA continues to hone her sound as the years progress, so we’re never quite sure what to expect. Inspired by the vibrancy of London, her tracks capture intimate themes in intoxicating melodic wrappers. Following ‘Heartworm’, a pop-rock-inspired take on toxic relationships and the need for independence, ‘Lipstick On A Glass’ leans further toward the electronic and alternative pop sound.
Filled with bold beats alongside synths and SERENA’s obscure vocals, ‘Lipstick On A Glass’ is toe-tapping with a confident flair of “I’m not going to take that” bad girl attitude. Twinkles of Bjork flutter behind a strong Gwen Stefani meets Jessie J execution layering female ferocity atop a shimmering mellifluous flow. I need to mention the Italian lyrics whispered with a serene sensuality giving ‘Lipstick On A Glass’ that something extra.
Just as ‘Heartworm’ touched on the desire for independence, ‘Lipstick On A Glass’ embodies a sense of optimistic empowerment and self-discovery but in a bit of an ironic way. SERENA explains: “I’ve always been fascinated by the power that make-up has to transform you into a whole different person whenever you need it. With drag culture going mainstream I felt this song will resonate with a lot of people…let me take you through a self-reflective journey about self-empowerment with a side of camp.”
