Sequel Films – Iridescent (2022)
The brainchild of singer-songwriter Adam Hailstone, Sequel Films finds that unique balance between synth-pop and surf-rock creating emotional melodies. Previously performing as Pink Films, UK-based Hailstone’s new project has been referred to as “magnetically lush…” (Obscure Sound) with “…honest and heartfelt lyricism…” (Plastic Mag). While Sequel Films is a relatively new project, Hailstone is already an experienced artist having played sold-out shows in the UK. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Iridescent’.
Following his debut EP, From The Top Floor, Hailstone adopts a soft, soothing tone in ‘Iridescent’. The eclectic combination of synth-pop and rock comes through with a nostalgic flair; however, a contemporary shot of alternative rock makes an appearance with a bold guitar – like a bright flash of light blasting through a wistful sonic haze. For me, ‘Iridescent’ is fresh but familiar with a flitting reminiscence to the sound of Prince. A whimsical, blurry, foggy ambience shrouds a kaleidoscopic melody creating a soul-stirring piece of music.
In an interview with RGM, Adam Hailstone (as Sequel Films) shared that he is “pretty resilient in difficult times…in music creation and [my] personal life” and it is this sentiment that he uses to show coping with mental health issues. Hailstone further shared that ‘Iridescent’ is “a song about anxiety and having to deal with the stress of going out when you are an introvert”. I find this intriguing as it shows a juxtaposition between the melody and lyricism of ‘Iridescent’. Social anxiety is a profound topic that should be represented by something harder and heavier; however, it is elegantly captured in a wistful, almost whimsical tune. Perhaps it is this bubble of innocence that holds the desperation and melancholy making it easier to navigate stressful situations.
Sentimental, sincere and soothing, Sequel Films releases his intoxicating new single ‘Iridescent’.
