Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers – Damaged Goods (2024)

Finding the most intimate areas of reality, UK-based group Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers explore relationships, life changes, and complex emotions in their moving melodies. While the band has only two singles beneath their belt, including the new single ‘Damaged Goods’, they have already captured an international audience to critical acclaim. The band is well-known for their quirky live shows, but the raw feeling behind their emotional tunes seep into their studio releases; so, in other words, we can all enjoy the enigmatic enthusiasm of Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers’ performances from the comfort of our armchair.

Following the well-received debut single ‘A Thousand Guesses’, the group’s sophomore track is a simplistic piano-driven ballad with a classic soft rock vibe. Hints of the Beatles rush through ‘Damaged Goods’, in fact I can imagine Paul McCartney singing this song with tender gusto. The piano is the driving force, but the combination of drums and guitar creates a sonic blanket you can wrap around yourself; however, it is the soaring flute that inserts the extra hint of soulful sincerity. As the flute leads the tune out, I find it seems a sweet human whistle with a wistful air of “yep, that’s how it all goes”.

As with McCartney, Seán Finn’s vocals have a tinge of sadness lost in the warm timbre – a lingering hint of deeper understanding from an old soul. Rich and full, Finn highlights the sophistication and elegance of the melody but, again, a haze of fragility whispers along the dulcet tones.

While the slip of McCartney-esque sounds litter ‘Damaged Goods’, the songwriting is as intricate, pensive and powerful as McCartney’s ‘The Long and Winding Road’ or ‘Eleanor Rigby’. Poignant melancholy oozes from the dark lyricism as Finn ponders the “hardships faced by young women as they leave home and face the world on their own…” Yet, as blunt and profound as the poetic tune may be, a glimmer of hope shines as “the narrator assures them that one day their prince will come…”
