Seafarers – Everything I’d Do (To Get A Hold On You) (2024)

Described as virtuosic, delectable, unique, and elegant, London-based Seafarers travel across a kaleidoscopic sonic ocean taking us along for the ride. Pirates in a musical world, there is nothing pedestrian about Seafarers; from chamber pop to indie-rock, folk, pop-rock and jazz, the six-piece gather their booty and share it with audiences across the globe. Formed in 2018, the group breach their UK borders with critical acclaim for two albums and several singles. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Everything I’d Do (To Get A Hold On You)’, some join us as we delve into the new single.

Following the well-received single ‘Bedwetters’, Seafarers delicately explore human fragility with the new track ‘Everything I’d Do (To Get A Hold On You)’. Opening as a simplistic layering of Tom Taylor’s piano and Lauren Kinsella’s soulful vocals, there is a barebones freshness to the song; however, as the melody continues a crescendo to an indie-pop meets folk tone is heard. Combining Tom McCredie’s bass, Arun Thavasothy’s guitar, and Dave Hamblett’s drums, the rush of music pushes forward immersing listeners in a flood of kaleidoscopic music.

Kinsella’s moving voice is soothing and has a warmth to its rich nature, but simultaneously haunting with a slight chill. Seeping into your soul, the melody (vocals and all) has a push-pull tug tipping from despair and trauma to hopeful solace, but it is Matthew Herd’s saxophone that adds further intensity to the genre-diverse single.

The arrangement itself is intoxicating and quite skin-chilling, but the theme of the single enhances its depth, intimacy and connection with listeners. Seafarers explain:

“Written in tribute to great Nashville country ballads, ‘Everything I’d Do (To Get A Hold On You)’ is set within the throes of a dysfunctional campus relationship. Told from the point of view of someone relentlessly in love, we follow them through the wintry streets of a university town, through bars and bedsits, trying to get a handle on an impossible person… ‘Everything I’d Do (To Get A Hold On You)’ came from trying to write a song that belongs in their world of heartbreak and yearning, but placing the story somewhere small and futile…”
