Sea Legs – Head In The Sand (2018)

Sea Legs is a three-piece alternative rock band from Leeds. On November 9th, 2018, Sea Legs released their debut single ‘Head In The Sand’. The overall tone of the song has the folk-rock sound of Wilco with Beatles-esque harmonies in the chorus. The single was featured in BBC’s Introducing West Yorkshire and created a buzz in Leeds and other parts of Europe.

In terms of sound, I can definitely detect the influences of The Beatles and the indie/folk-rock vibe. I can also hear traces of Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney’s Wings, more specifically during the chorus of ‘Band On The Run’.

Lyrically, the song is about being so distant that you feel as though you’re truly alone; so alone that you don’t notice when others are around. There’s being alone in the sense that you feel like you don’t have anyone, then there’s being alone in the sense that you isolate yourself from everyone and hole yourself up from the outside world. You will do just about anything to pass the time, as long as socialising with others isn’t involved. Even if it includes reading a book about something like cacti.

I’ve had my head in the sand. Not to sound dramatic, but I think I might be losing it. Your problem with your head in your hands is that you can’t really see what’s going on around you.

Sea Legs, ‘Head in the Sand’

The artist’s mind is so focused on something else that they’re not able to appreciate or recognise the world around them. They’re afraid that because they’ve become so unattached from the rest of the world, they might be losing their mind trying to figure out what’s running through their head.

Looking at the lyrics, I would say this is from both a personal and objective point of view. The artist is talking about being detached themselves, as well as somebody who is a friend or significant other. It’s also possible that the song is based on personal experience where the writer was either the one experiencing or the one who knew and helped someone with these feelings.

What I find interesting is that there is more than one perspective. I really enjoyed this song. Normally I’m not a fan of folk-rock, but I do like The Beatles and I can relate to this song. I know what it’s like to want to sink into isolation and not have any contact with anyone. Constantly thinking and having things fly around your head where you want to figure things out before you’re able to talk about it. I also know what it’s like to be concerned for others who are in that dark place.

I recommend this band to anyone one who’s a fan of music from the mid-1960s to the late-1980s. ‘Head in The Sand’ By Sea Legs is now available on Spotify and Apple Music.
