Scarlett Sno – Terrified (2024)
Describing her discography as “music for the human condition”, singer-songwriter Scarlett Sno allows us an insight into the “diary of her life” through moving melodies. Sno discovered her passion for composition as a youngster who also had a natural penchant for storytelling. As she grew, so did her influences, her style and, as with everyone, she found an identity that is entirely Scarlett Sno and no one else. This is our introduction to the US-based musician and her blend of pop, rock, hip-hop, and alternative rock turns our heads with eager appeal. Today, we take a look at the latest addition to her repertoire, ‘Terrified’.
Following her critically acclaimed 2022 single ‘Helium’, ‘Terrified’ is Sno’s first release in two years. Between then and now, life got in the way with Sno recovering from muscle tension dysphonia – a result of having Covid-19 in 2022. Over the year, she “struggled with the fear of never being able to sing or speak again, the anxiety of not knowing what would happen to her career, and what she was willing to sacrifice to make her dreams come true…” – the inspiration for her new single.
Turning the issue of chasing dreams on its head, ‘Terrified’ explores how you might desire your dreams so desperately that they have a way of chasing you instead of you reaching for the aspiration. It’s the gut-wrenching fear dancers have before they step onto the stage that they might fall flat on their faces; it’s the singer’s heart-pounding thought of forgetting your lines or losing your voice as you stand with the microphone in your hand. Slivering up your back with anxious dismay, but also sending exuberant electricity through your body, dreams reaching you is as exciting as it is terrifying.
Capturing the core of this kaleidoscopic demon lovingly and brashly pushing you forward, ‘Terrified’ is a blast of alternative pop whirling about an eerie cinematic soundscape. From the psychedelic guitars and synths to the haunting strings, ‘Terrified’ has you spinning about lost in turmoil, fear and debilitating terror; however, Sno’s rich vocals offer a sense of understanding, acceptance and assistance to move from nervousness to bold empowerment. Sno hopes that “this song can lead others out of the darkness just as the haunting melody did for her.”
