Scarlet Joy – Lost at Sea (2022)

Long distance relationships can be challenging as the physical distance starts to creep into the emotional connection. This type of relationship inspired ‘Lost at Sea’ by Scarlet Joy, which looks at the pain and loneliness that comes from separation. These feelings are swirled into a mix of uncertainty and frustration that tinges thoughts of the future, leaving you even more lost than before.

While hitting on a lot of emotions and feelings that have you feeling lost, the band hits out with a rather raucous sound. Sophia Woodcraft (vocals, guitar), Drew Moore (drums) and Tom Latham (bass) introduce us to their sound with this single which is off their upcoming debut album. Woodcraft and Latham first met at a gig, before Woodcraft met Moore through a studio and formed this band in 2019.

Woodcraft’s vocals open ‘Lost at Sea’, on their own seeming to call out across a still body of water. There is a foggy feeling to the opening vocal line like the mists that hang over water in the early morning. As the layered harmonisations fill the lower levels of the performance, the main line calls out with loneliness and pain. There is a bone-deep feeling to the emotions that sink talons into your chest and leave it churning with complex feelings. As the rock tones really start going, the vocals are tinged with frustration at the situation and the emotions that are plaguing her. It is an amazing vocal performance that swirls negative emotions with a desire and love that seems to be straining the longer the distance remains. Everything drops for a whisper later as a sense of being lost hits home, packed with the feeling of drowning in the negative emotions. There is a plea for help in the latter parts of the single that clings to the hope of a happy ever after.

After the opening vocal line, the melody enters with a deep crash of cymbals that almost mimic a rock hitting still water and sinking into dark depths. The drums have a building feeling to them as they create tension for the dark emotions of the single to feed on. As the chorus hits, the music rises into a steadier rock movement that has you bopping to the rhythm. Woven into the crash of rock tones is a sense of frustration and uncertainty that coils in the pit of your stomach. It is a melody that enhances the complexities of the vocals, while bringing its own hit of emotion.

Frustration, loneliness, pain, uncertainty and pleas for help have been packed into the rich rock sounds of ‘Lost at Sea’ by Scarlet Joy . The vocals call to something deep in your soul as they bring a complex merger of negative emotions and love that threaten to overtake your senses. The melody has a darkness to it that feeds the negative parts of the vocals, while getting you slowly moving to the rhythm.
