Satellite Train – Shameless (2023)

Drawing together the musical stylings of a plethora of renowned artists, Satellite Train showcases the best and brightest of Australian and American musicians. Originally a side project among friends, the nine-piece pushes listeners into a kaleidoscopic sonic journey while leading them with a sophisticated sonic hand. Featuring Michael Paynter from Icehouse, John McCall of The Black Sorrows, Pasquale Monea of Jane’s Addiction, Jamie Muhoberac of John Mayers’ band, Gregg Bissonette of Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band, John Watson of Australian Crawl, Shane O’Mara, Randy Jacobs, and Susan Turner, you can see what a superstar line-up looks like.

Building a loyal following with their debut singles ‘Broken Heart’ and ‘Lies’ (released in 2022), the veteran musicians brought an unparalleled sound to the masses. Now, as the first release in 2023, Satellite Train allow fans to delve deeper into their music with the intriguing and engaging single ‘Shameless’.

Taking listeners one step further into a sonic dimension of another realm, ‘Shameless’ steps away from the jazz-infused rock meets pop sound of Satellite Train. It taps further into a modern-day pop style with singer-songwriter Michael Paynter leading the way. Her dulcet tones are not only soothing but have a bold attitude beneath the smooth, calming tone. Bring the melodic arrangement of guitars, keyboards, drums and interspersed piano, and you have a song that is both hot, cold and tepid in its mellifluous flow. In other words, you’re dipping your toe into a sonic pool catering to all audiences and their pets. I must admit, the tinkering piano in the background might be the cherry on the top for me.

The lead single from their Spacewalk collection, ‘Shameless’ presents a “more refined alternative pop sound” as compared to The Melbourne Sessions. Both are distinctive collections of songs but there is a greater focus on live performance in The Melbourne Sessions. Either way, it’s good music all ‘round playing the best of the best…at least, that’s what we think.
