Sarantos – I Got No Money (2023)

There are various situations where your thoughts can ramble into the most amazing ideas and one of these is people-watching. It’s fascinating how watching average individuals complete mundane tasks can be inspiring, but this is where Sarantos began. When not busy helping his family in the diner, the US-based musician would write lyrics, compose music and create a sensational project by just watching people. Now an international award-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Sarantos releases melodies defying genres melding elements of hip hop, pop, rock, Christian and EDM to develop something new, fun and intriguing. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘I Got No Money’.

When speaking about ‘I Got No Money’, Sarantos recalls “at my lowest, I made a vow – I want to go to bed every night knowing I put a smile on someone’s face…”; this is just what he does with his diverse repertoire. Following the well-received single ‘Another Surgery’, ‘I Got No Money’ darts hip hop with slices of EDM and pop. Unlike ‘Another Surgery’, the new single appears to be harder hitting with the profound lyricism licked by a harsh, chilling melody. Interestingly enough, while the melody hits you between the eyes with its thought-provoking nature, a warm embrace underlies the tune carrying you across the challenging theme with a swift but soft push.

Not afraid to touch on provocative topics, ‘I Got No Money’ delves into the average person’s struggle to, well, simply survive. Sarantos explains, “I went through a few low points in my life, one of the lowest having no money. I don’t mean when I was a teen, and I could spend the whole day out and spend only $5. I mean as a full-fledged adult with others relying on me…there’s nothing more dehumanising and demoralising than trying to figure out how you’re going to live when you have no money, how you’re going to find something to eat…just how you can make it through the day.”

Exploring human fragility and desperation with an exquisite delicacy, Sarantos pushes through the hardened hip-hop crust with his vulnerable single ‘I Got No Money’.
