Sarah O’Moore – Troubled Mind (2024)

Emerging soulful singer-songwriter, Sarah O’Moore has hit the ground running with her latest single ‘Troubled Mind’. Hailing from Ireland, Cork native to be exact, she now resides in the cultural melting pot that is Berlin. With ‘Troubled Mind’, O’Moore successfully explores the perils of modern life and how they affect young people. Using a solid backing track, a tone familiar to anyone who’s a fan of the sound honed by many a lounge act over the years.

In the new song, O’Moore’s rich vocals jump out straight away, with the feeling you could get lost in them over a drink in any dive bar the world over. Slow and atmospheric, bursting with a richness that helps you get lost in the music it contrasts greatly with the vocals which powerfully tell the story. There are definite comparisons to be had with the late pioneer of the soul revival, Amy Winehouse. I do feel that towards the end of the track, the stop is quite abrupt and did leave me wanting a little more music to close the track.

All being said, ‘Troubled Mind’ is a sound I’ve heard time and time again, but is due a resurgence. O’Moore has crafted her own take on it very well and I’m interested to hear more from her. Thankfully the wait won’t be long since her debut EP, Social Paralysis, is due out on 28th April this year. The EP, in her own words, has drawn inspiration from James Joyce’s classic Dubliners, which absolutely delighted me as this classic collection of short stories has always held a place on my bookshelf. I’m interested to see where ‘Trouble Mind’ sits in this EP, as I think being part of a well-curated record will only add to the track’s appeal.

“There was grace and mystery in her attitude as if she were a symbol of something” from my favourite story of the Dubliners, ‘The Dead’, seems fitting as it perfectly sums up O’Moore’s work, as this track has left me wondering what that something is; I look forward to finding out when I listen to Social Paralysis.
