Sarah Bernstein – A Woman Like Me (2024)

Known for her honest, engaging, genuine and original melodies that connect with audiences on an intimate level, Sarah Bernstein is that person you have a conversation with and never feel intimidated. At the age of 17, the German-American singer-songwriter recorded her debut EP Man In The Moon, and the original single ‘Boomerang’ reached the semi-finals of the International Songwriting Competition – that was in 2012. Over a decade later, with more experience and releases under her belt, Bernstein has honed her style to one that is entirely Sarah Bernstein and nothing else. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘A Woman Like Me’.

Co-produced with her mentor Shane Adams, mixed by Kenny Varga and mastered by Alex Dobbert, ‘A Woman Like Me’ is a nostalgic breath of vintage pop-rock. While the single retains the pop-rock essence heard in her previous single ‘Loser of the Year’, ‘A Woman Like Me’ embraces a more vulnerable and raw sound. A softer ballad, this is a song you can laugh to, cry to and immerse yourself entirely in its heart-wrenching simplicity.

Penned as a tribute to International Women’s Month, ‘A Woman Like Me’ has a simplistic quality but is a combination of numerous instruments. A kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry, Justin Ostrander’s guitar, Luis Espaillat’s bass, Shane Adams’ piano and Wes Little’s drums weave together with harmonic ease; however, it is Sarah Bernstein’s mellifluous vocals that bring it all together in a shimmering silvery symphony.

While Bernstein’s vocals are rich and warm with strong boldness, a lingering hint of vulnerability, fragility and tenderness exists. Sincerity oozes from ‘A Woman Like Me’ navigating a painful chasm of, well, just that nothingness that leaves you empty; however, from the hole, there is a light shining above. Filled with empowerment and hopefulness, ‘A Woman Like Me’ is intricate and profound in its sound and theme. Bernstein explains:

“I wrote ‘A Woman Like Me’ weeping at my coffee table in my old apartment. At its core, it’s a self-reflective song about identifying yourself as the problem… at the time, it was the most honest I’d ever been with myself in writing.”
